Children's Vision

Children’s eyes develop and change throughout childhood. Unfortunately they cannot tell us when they can’t see correctly, they do not know any difference as it is normal for them. This is why it is important to have children's eyes checked from a young age and regularly throughout childhood.

Parents often believe that their child’s eye sight will be checked throughout their school life, but this is not the case any more.

We always recommend that the first eye examination should be when children are 3 years old, unless there are problems, such as eyes turning, before this. Children do not need to know their letters, we have pictures and moving animals, and make it a fun time for them. There is a lot we can tell from looking at children’s eyes without them having to say anything!

The visual processes are developing up to the age of about 7 years and so the earlier problems are picked up the more chance there is of correcting them. If a child has a ‘lazy eye’ (amblyopia) and nothing is done before the age of 7, then their vision cannot be improved after this age.

We provide NHS eye examinations and vouchers towards the cost of children's spectacles for those under 16 or under 19 but still in full time education. In our displays you will find a good range of free frames as well as some great children's designer brands such as Bench Kids, Barbie, No Fear, Ben 10, and Star Wars. Our ranges of modern frames feature attractive detailing at excellent prices.

All children’s lenses come with a free of charge UV coating which protects vulnerable eyes by restricting the amount of potentially damaging ultra-violet light entering the eyes.
